He was born in Somerset, Kentucky on July 26, 1920; son of the late James W. Sumner and Mollie Foster Sumner Britt. He was the Co-Owner of Boone & Sumner Paint Store in Somerset. Bill was the oldest living member of Ferguson Baptist Church, where he served as a Trustee. He was a Veteran of the US Army, where he served during WWII as a winch operator in the Philippines.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Oveline “Ovie” Waddle Sumner; a brother and sister-in-law, Marcie & Lucille Waddle Haynes, and brother-in-law, Frank Higginbotham; niece and nephews, Betty Sumner, Cecil Sumner Jr., and Bruce Haynes.

Bill enjoyed spending time with his friends at McDonalds Coffee Club each morning. During the last few years these men considered him their responsibility and took great care of him.

Later in life, one of Bill and Ovie’s greatest joys was spending time with their great-nephews, Aaron and Riley Hall. If they were playing a sport, Bill and Ovie were always there cheering them on.

It is impossible to summarize the times of joy and accomplishments over 98 years in a brief paragraph. Bill will be missed by many more people than those listed here.
