Virginia Gladys Carpenter Hawkins, 100, passed away at The Neighborhood of Somerset, Kentucky on Thursday, November 21, 2024.

She was born on September 20, 1924 in Glade Park, Colorado to John Henry and Anna Belle (Getty) Carpenter and was the third to the last child of a large family. Virginia was the wife of James E Hawkins Jr. ,who she married on April 28, 1944. they would spend the next 57 years together. She and her husband owned and operated B and H Shoe Store which became a popular retail store in Somerset, Kentucky , eventually opening multiple locations and was operated by three generations of the family for seventy- two years. Virginia and her husband were members and the First Baptist Church and First Christian Church. She was a woman of deep faith who loved the Lord and wanted to share His love with others, She did this by founding a soup kitchen to help others who were in need of a good meal and by sending cards to people that were filled with encouragement. Virginia had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and have fun with friends and family. She was also known for her love of the color purple, be it clothes or flowers.

She is survived by her three daughters; Judy Holtzclaw, Marsha (Danny) Barnett, Amy (David) Barnett, her grandchildren Leslie Scott, Joe Ford, Eddie Ford, Lynn Morris, Jeff Barnett, Jon Barnett, Dave Barnett, Tommy Barnett, Jimbo Hawkins and Samantha Taylor. Virginia also leaves behind 14 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Jim Hawkins as well as her son, Jimmy Hawkins and her 10 siblings.

Visitation will be Monday, November 25, 2024 at The First Baptist Church of Somerset, Kentucky from 11:00 AM till 1:00 PM.

A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM with Bro. David Pendley and Rev. Joe Altman officiating.

Pallbearers will be Joe Ford, Eddie Ford, Jeff Barnett, Jon Barnett, Dave Barnett, Tommy Barnett and Jimbo Hawkins.
Honorary pallbearers will be; Leslie Scott, Lynn Morris, and Samantha Taylor.

Burial will follow in the Somerset Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers the family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to The First Christian Church or The Frist Baptist Church, Project 58:10.
