Verda Mae Hines Hughes passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at her residence. She was born May 5, 1924 to James Samuel and Martha Baker Hines at Grade, KY. She graduated from Shopville High School and taught two years for Pulaski County Schools. She was a member of the Malvin Hill Baptist Church where she taught classes and Vacation Bible School. She loved to garden, and can produce from her garden. She also loved tending to her flowers, all kinds of crafts and researching genealogy on both sides of the family.On July 15, 1944 she married Robert E. Hughes, they remained married for 64 years until his death in 2008. Two children blessed this union; Gloria Jean (who is deceased) and Robert E. Jr. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Amy (and Scott) Phelps of Beaver Dam and Mitch of Frankfort; two great grandchildren, Austin and Cameron; one brother, Jim; and a former daughter-in-law, Jeanie Hughes.Other than her parents, husband and daughter, she was also preceded in death by one great grandson, Matthew Ryan Phelps; three brothers, Bill, Porter, and Ralph; five sisters, Marie, Hazel, Thelma, Emma Lyn and Peggy.Verda loved life, her family and her church and leaves a host of other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. The family of Mrs. Hughes would like to take this opportunity to express their gratitude to Verda Mae's good friend and neighbor of many years, Lisa Day, for assisting in her care as well as to the private caregivers, Donna and Jackie, and the many nurses and staff with her home health care and the team of nurses with Hospice of Lake Cumberland. In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Malvin Hill Cemetery Fund, Clay Hill Cemetery Fund or Hospice of Lake Cumberland. A funeral service for Verda Mae Hughes will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 24th at the Clay Hill Baptist Church with Bro. Vestal Meece officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay Hill Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Hughes will receive friends at the Clay Hill Baptist Church from 11:00 a.m. Saturday until time for services at 1:00 p.m. Pulaski Funeral Home in honored to be assisting the family of Mrs. Hughes at this time.
