Rev. Sidgle Lee "S.L." Sears, 98, of Somerset, Kentucky passed away Saturday, December 23, 2017 at the Jean Waddle Care Center.
He was born in Mt. Victory, Kentucky on April 13, 1919; son of the late Alonzo Tulley and Martha Bolton Sears. Sidgle was a US Navy Veteran during WWII; after leaving the war and returning home he went into the lumber business, purchasing his first saw mill where he sold rough lumber. In later years he would become a part of Cumberland Chair where they manufactured chair backs, and sold various early American style furniture products to Sears, Roebuck and Company. In later years the business moved toward producing lumber and hardwood flooring products, now known as Somerset Hardwood Flooring. Sidgle was honored to be partners with Odell and Steve Merrick, and his family remains grateful for their years of partnership and friendship. Sidgle became a Christian and a member of West Somerset Baptist Church, where he later become an ordained minister. Throughout the years he was the pastor of Saline Baptist Church, Bradley's Pleasure Baptist Church, Pitman Creek Baptist Church, and Parkers Mill Baptist Church. Sidgle was the first minister of Parkers Mill Baptist Church when it started as a mission from Langdon Street Baptist Church. As pastor he along with the congregation built the church, as it stands today.
He is survived by his daughter, Wilda Sears Benham; two grandchildren, Michael Newman, and Joy & (Chris) Skidmore; and two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Skidmore and Elise Skidmore.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Agnes Spears, whom he married on March 11, 1939, and who passed away in December 2005; his parents; siblings, Edward Sears, James Sears, Charles Ray Sears, Marjorie Nolte, and John Sears; and a son-in-law, R.L. Benham.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM Friday, December 29, 2017 at Parkers Mill Baptist Church with Bro. Darry Hatfield officiating.
Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
Visitation for Rev. Sidgle Lee "S.L." Sears will be from 5 to 8 PM Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Parkers Mill Baptist Church and after 10 AM Friday until time for services.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan.
