Maxine Garrett

March 27, 1925 — May 10, 2024

Maxine W. Garrett was born on March 27, 1925, in Somerset, Kentucky, and passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the age of 99 at Baptist Health in Lexington, Kentucky, following a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Willie Grider and Annie Owsley Grider.

Affectionately known as "Mac”, she professed her faith in Christ early in life under the pastorate of the late Rev. W. B. Wood and joined South Maple Street First Baptist Church. She was a dedicated member who served the church diligently as long as her health allowed. She loved her church and contributed actively to various church ministries, including the Women’s Missionary Society, BTU, and Usher Board. She also cherished her involvement in the Women’s Civic Club, working on the annual “Tea” to fund scholarships for high school seniors. Maxine graduated from Dunbar High School, pursued a career as a Licensed Practical Nurse, and became a Certified Respiratory Therapy Technician, retiring from what is now Lake Cumberland Regional Medical Center after over 40 years of service.

On June 7, 1946, she married Louis Daniel Garrett, and together they shared 59 years of marriage. From this union, they were blessed with four children: Billy, Janis, Karen, and Danita. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Annie Grider; her devoted husband, Louis D. Garrett; daughter, Karen Ann Garrett; sisters, Daisy Gillespie and Consuella Lee; brothers, James Grider and Ralph Grider; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Left to cherish her memory are Billy (Charlesanna) Garrett, Janis (Nathaniel) Carter, and Danita (Frank) Ross Sr. all of Lexington, KY; seven grandchildren: William (Meredith), Kenneth (Dolores), and Kesayne Green; Darrick (Andreala) and Micah Garr; Frank Jr. and Ariel Ross; sister-in-law Cornelia Grider (Milwaukee, WI); numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Maxine Garrett will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her unwavering faith, service to her community, and love for her family. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
