Mary Jane Squires Lackey passed away August 18, 2022, at the Neighborhood of Somerset Assisted Living. She was born in Richmond, Kentucky, August 29, 1925, to Ethel and Dean Squires. Mary Jane’s childhood was spent in Whitesburg, Kentucky, where her father was Superintendent of schools and Principal of the high school from 1928-1940. She attended Transylvania University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Mary Jane and her husband, Dr. Otho M Lackey, D.V.M., met in Berea, Kentucky, married in 1946, and were married 50 years until his sudden death in January 1996. They lovingly raised four children, and she later worked for Community Greeting Service and the Welcome Wagon, which suited her well.
Mary Jane was active in duplicate bridge, choir, church activities, hospital volunteer work, Friday Lunch Bunch, the local DAR Chapter, and was a regular on the walking track at Rocky Hollow her final years. She was a follower of Christ and a charter member of Grace Baptist Church. She has been a blessing and an inspiration to her family, as well as many others in her path.
Mary Jane (Nanny / Grandmother) is survived by her children Dr. Monty (Patty) Lackey of Evansville, Indiana, Beth (David) Moody, Mary Lou (Dr. Brian) Priddle, and Mark (Susie) Lackey, all of Somerset, Kentucky; her grandchildren, Dr. Rachel (Dr. Tony) Czaplicki, Dr. Wesley (Gillian) Lackey, Regan (Jon) Dame, Chad (Haylee) Moody, Stephanie (Mark) Henderson, Scott (Lindsey) Moody, Lindsey (Davin) Roberts, Keith (Katie) Priddle, Abby (Ryle) Benke, Chris (Monica) Lackey, and Cam Lackey; and 22 great grandchildren.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, a sister Evadean (John) Callaway, brother Jim (Joan) Squires, nieces Mary Michalove, and Mary Dean Buckner, and nephews Johnny Callaway and Dean Squires.
Visitation will be Monday, August 22, 2022, at Grace Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with the service to follow at Noon with Pastor Bill Haynes officiating.
Pulaski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Grace Baptist Church or The Neighborhood Employees Appreciation Fund.
Our Family feels deep gratitude to all those at The Neighborhood who gave Mother such tender, loving care.
