The Honorable Larry Whitaker was born in Hazard, Kentucky on August 12, 1950 and departed from this life on March 28, 2024 in the comfort of his home. He was 73 years old.
Although Larry was born in the coal fields of Eastern Kentucky, he lived in many different parts of the world during his father’s time in the Air Force. Places including Germany, Libya, and numerous military bases across the United States. He attended four high schools, ultimately graduating from Somerset High School in 1968. Larry received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kentucky and his law degree from Salmon P. Chase College of Law.
Larry was a highly esteemed criminal defense attorney, known for his wit and charisma in and out of the courtroom. He was notable for his vast collection of muscle cars throughout the years, especially his Challengers. Practicing law was his passion and he enjoyed nothing more than being in the courtroom with his fellow colleagues. He served the Somerset community and surrounding counties for 42 years. During that time, he was proud to be honored as a Kentucky Colonel as well.
He is survived by his mother, Patricia Cornett Lovelace; his sister, Sharon (and Mike) Brewer; his daughter, Autumn (and Ethan) Griffiths; his sons, Chase and Chancellor Whitaker; his beloved grandson, Eli Griffiths; and his longtime partner, Julie Miller. Julie faithfully cared for Larry during his courageous battle with cancer.
Larry was preceded in death by his father, William “Bill” Lovelace Jr. and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Pulaski County Animal Shelter.
A visitation for Larry Whitaker will be held Thursday, April 4, 2024 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pulaski Funeral Home.
A funeral service for Larry Whitaker will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 5th at Pulaski Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.
