John L. Schaar, of Somerset, KY, passed away quietly in his sleep on October 19, 2022 at 93 years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years Jaclin Koppman Schaar, parents Louis H. Schaar and Velma (Burrous) Schaar, and sister, Lois (Schaar) Kilbourne. John, (also known as "Grandpa Trouble" ,"Doda", "Walking Eagle", and other terms of endearment), is the beloved family founder to his three adoring children: Mark A. Schaar and wife Deborah; Jeanne (Schaar) Lose and husband Wayne; and Jill A. Schaar and husband Giorgio Caflisch. His pride and joy were his four grandchildren: Mallory (Schaar) Planck and husband Jake; Megan (Schaar) Rosenberger and husband Kevin; Zack Lose and fiancé Tori Applegate; and Carlo Caflisch. John also cherished Brooke Casterline as a granddaughter. John was thrilled to be blessed with 4 great- grandchildren: Carter Planck, Brynnley Planck, Kayson Rosenberger, and Kyler Rosenberger. John graduated from North High School in Akron, Ohio in 1947, before earning a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1951 from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, where he met the love of his life. He married Jackie on November 22, 1951, and almost immediately was called from the National Guard to serve the United States Army in the Korean War. After his return from combat in Korea, and while raising his three children with Jackie, he received a Masters in Chemistry and became a notable research chemist for Proctor & Gamble, Merrell, Hess & Clark and Monsanto. He earned several chemical patents during his career, but his greatest pride was being a team member on the patent for the fertility drug Clomid, as decades later, John's work on Clomid aided in the birth of one of his own great grandchildren. Always an avid supporter of his children's and grandchildren's daily lives and activities --whether school, sports, musicals, or drill team performances -- John's adoring dedication to and love for his family defined his life. We hold you closely always in our hearts. A private memorial service will be held, followed by an inurnment at Mill Springs National Cemetery.
