Ellen Alcorn Coomer, of Somerset, Kentucky, passed away on October 9, 2023 with her devoted husband and sons by her side.
Ellen was born on January 1, 1944 to Mary Ellen Hines Alcorn and Raymond Alcorn in Somerset, KY. On August 11, 1962 she married her high school sweetheart Dan Coomer. Together they were devoted parents to their sons Mark and Matt and in 2004 Ellen became “Granny”, first to Matthew, then to Sarah and Tommy.
Ellen was preceded in death by her mother Mary Ellen Hines Alcorn and her father Raymond Alcorn.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years Daniel Carl Coomer, sons Mark Daniel Coomer of Brooklyn, NY and Matthew Carl Coomer (Lee) of Springfield, KY, two grandsons Matthew Thomas Coomer and Thomas Haydon Coomer, one granddaughter Sarah Ellen Coomer, a brother Steve Alcorn (Joanne) of Winter Haven, Florida and a host of nieces and nephews.
Ellen graduated from Somerset High School and then from Bowling Green College of Commerce. She was a gifted artist which led her to be a founding and active member of Bluegrass Tolers and Lake Cumberland Decorative Artists for over 40 years. She especially loved teaching art classes and painting, among many other things, Christmas ornaments for her grandchildren. In addition to painting, Ellen was often seen crocheting beautiful blankets as gifts for family and friends.
In addition to her art, Ellen loved doing things with and for her family. She and Dan enjoyed traveling, working in the garden, canning, and taking care of their flowers together. Ellen always enjoyed time with friends whether it was an exciting adventure or a simple lunch outing.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Pulaski Funeral Home. The family of Ellen Coomer will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. Friday until time for services.
