Edward Donald Akin, 86, of Somerset, passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
He was born in Somerset on March 28, 1933; son of the late George & Violet Lowe Akin, and a step-son of the late, Perk Girdler. Throughout the years he worked for American Standard, Litton Industries, and would retire from Levi Strauss. He would later work for Oakwood here in Somerset. He was an avid swimmer, who had a love for the lake, and enjoyed sun bathing. He enjoyed playing horse shoes, and watching wrestling with his brother Lloyd. He had a passion for woodworking, starting in his high school years where he made tables for his mother, that love grew into a hobby that he loved. He was a Veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Bingham Akin whom he married on March 30, 1956; four sons, Michael & Carla) Akin, Ronald & (Jackie) Akin, Timothy Akin, and Kevin & (Alice) Akin; two sisters, Glenda & (Darrell) Wilson, and Gayla Reyer; grandchildren, Allen Akin, Brian Akin, Christopher Akin, Shaun & (Brittany) Akin, Emily Akin, Leah Akin, Aaron Akin, Kevin Akin II, Brittany Perkins, and Joshua Akin; and nine great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his step-father; three brothers, Amos Akin, Tommy Girdler, and Lloyd Girdler; three sisters, Francis Dugger, Lois Ragel, and Wanda Leatherberry; and a brother-in-law, Tom Reyer.
A funeral service will be held at 2 PM Friday, February 21, 2020 at the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Dunbar officiating.
Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post #38 Honor Guard.
Burial will be in Somerset Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 12 PM Friday, until time for services.
