Gene Hurt, age 95 of Somerset, Kentucky went to be with his Lord and savior on December 29, 2023 at the Jean Waddle Care Center at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital following an illness.
Gene was born in the old Somerset City Hospital on August 22, 1928 to parents Luke and Edna Meece Hurt, and was a lifetime resident of Pulaski Co.
Gene is survived by his children, Kim & (Doug) Crouch of Somerset, Jeanne Sutton of Somerset, and Don Hurt of Somerset; his grandchildren, Ryan Sutton, Cody & (Jessica) Sutton, Logan & (Jenna) Sutton, Shaun & (Haley) Dick, Hilary Dick, Donovan & (fiancé Abbey) Hurt and Devan Hurt; his great-grandchildren MaKayla Dick, Riley Hatfield, Oakley Dick, Camden Cowan, Kai Strode, Fern Sutton, Bennett Sutton, and Kennedy Sutton; his niece Andrea & (Randy) Dotson; and his nephew Scott Decker.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Lynn Hurt, whom he married in Eubank, Kentucky on September 5, 1953 and who passed on October 28, 2021; his parents, Luke and Edna Meece Hurt; his daughter-in-law, Kim Hurt; sister-in-law, Janet Decker; brother-in-law, Andy Decker; and his brother-in-law, Verlin Huddleston; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elbert and Mable Huddleston.
Gene graduated from Somerset High School in 1946 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he served until 1949. After his graduation he returned to his families dairy farm and married his wife Mary Lynn in 1953. Gene used his GI benefits to obtain a bachelors degree in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky.
After college, Gene took various jobs in Somerset, until 1960 when he was hired by Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent. Gene worked with Kentucky Farm Bureau in various roles until 2019. Selling insurance was Gene's passion, as he loved to deal with people and become close with a lot of his clients and their families.
In his spare time, Gene enjoyed working on his farm, golf, collecting antiques, going to his grandchildren's sporting events and watching sports in general. He was a passionate Kentucky Wildcat fan, Cincinnati Reds fan, and attended Somerset High School football games from the age of 4 years old until he no longer was able to drive.
Gene was known by many people in the community, and had a very outgoing personality and good sense of humor. Gene was the patriarch of his family, and a strong role model for them. He faithfully attended First United Methodist Church from early childhood, and maintained strong Christian values.
Funeral services for Gene Hurt will be held at 3 PM on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Glenn Cox officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 PM to 3 PM Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Pulaski Funeral Home.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Jean Waddle Care Center, Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
