If there was ever a problem to be solved (math, physics, home repair), Mr. Doug Mounce would be in line to eagerly take the challenge. Now he is basking in the glow of the Creator where difficulty and problems cease to exist.
Charles Douglas (Doug) Mounce, age 82, of Somerset, peacefully went to his heavenly home with Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 1, 2024 (fittingly during the alignment of the perfect seven planets), at Harrodsburg Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on September 13, 1942, in Colo, Kentucky (Pulaski County) to the late Charlie Frank Mounce and Minnie Florence Smiley Mounce. He was proud of his birthplace and upbringing. Doug was saved by grace at a young age and was a faithful member at White Lily Baptist Church (where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years) until his death.
Doug (known as "Bud" by close family and friends) and "Mr. Mounce" by thousands of Somerset High School Briar Jumpers) was known for his outgoing personality, humble demeanor, and genuine smile. He was grounded in a great love of his faith, family, outdoor sporting, tennis, and science/problem solving. He took pride in doing things the right way and persevering through difficult challenges, knowing there was hope and restoration in eternal life. Doug experienced a few illnesses and setbacks since September, along with a private but long battle with adult-onset limb girdle muscular dystrophy. He never asked "Why me?" but rather accepted his diagnosis with grace with Mary Ann and Amy (Eric) by his side.
After graduating from Somerset High School (SHS), Doug (affectionately known as Mr. Mounce) graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a degree in math and physics. He taught at Nancy High School for one year. Doug retired after completing 32 years teaching math, physics, and computer science at Somerset High School (SHS). Doug taught and mentored thousands of students. He was known for his engaging and encouraging teaching style, where concepts were applied and practical. His education tenure was described by former students and fellow teachers as mentoring, loyal, engaged, patient, steady, and humorous. Among his many achievements and teaching awards, he was proud of starting the first Academic Team in the mid 80's at SHS, traveling county to county for team competitions and organizing an academic conference with eight area schools to compete in academics. He also launched the first Computer Science Program at SHS. Ultimately, he was most proud of seeing his former students' success in their chosen careers.
Besides teaching, Doug was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bird hunting in the Pulaski County Area and bass fishing all over Lake Cumberland and into Dale Hollow, TN. Doug joyfully fished enough for ten lifetimes. Since high school, he played softball, basketball, tennis, and racket ball. His buddies were lifelong friends with whom he continued to engage, sometimes talking for hours on the phone, catching up on all of life. Up until his recent illness, he dedicated several hours a day studying the Bible.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents as well as brothers-in-law Charles Fisher and Danny Fisher, and best friends Raymond F. Hail (a brother-in-law who was more like a brother), Dempsey Nicholas, Charlie Taylor (Coach T), Jim Williams, Jim Trachsel, Mike Presley, and Bill Mounce.
Surviving family include a loving, dedicated, and faithful wife and caregiver (his "Gift") of 56 years, Mary Ann Fisher Mounce, whom he married on June 13,1968 in Somerset, daughter (his "Sugar") Amy Suzanne Nicholas (and Eric) of Nicholasville, sister Drusilla Hail of Somerset, sister-in-law, Bonnie (Howard) Ping of Somerset, nieces and nephews, Melody (Evan) Hargis of Somerset, Lori (Mike) McQueen of Somerset, Chris (Kelli) Hail of Jackson, TN, Allan (Gretchen) Ping of Richmond, Stephen (Heather) Fisher of Greensboro, NC, and several great nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom were cherished by Doug.
The family is confident Doug knew we loved him with all our hearts. Mary Ann was his faithful, selfless, loving companion and caregiver right to the very end, and Amy and Eric enjoyed every moment they spent with Doug. He loved Jesus as a good and faithful servant. No longer is he suffering in this world. He would want you to know he's in Heaven completely healed and whole, now walking with full strength and a crystal-clear Mr. Mounce mind again. What a day of rejoicing for him!
The family wants to thank LCMA and LCRH (especially Dr. Jeff Golden and physician team, residents, nurses, and all the knowledgeable staff), Tammie Reppert (his caring Amedisys home health nurse), Comfort Keepers (Craig Wesley), and most recently, Harrodsburg Health and Rehab facility staff. These providers loved Doug and Mary Ann and prayed for him while in their care. Three special pharmacist and nurse friends (Catherine Robertson Hanna and Kimberly Sasser Croley, and Carol Dunnington Price) helped navigate his last few months of care.
