Alberta Carter Herron

September 19, 1933 — August 30, 2024

Alberta Cox Carter-Herron, age 90, passed away Friday, August 30th, 2024 at her residence.

Alberta was born in Burnside, Kentucky on September 13, 1933 to the late Charles Robert "Bob" Cox and Hazel Ann (Thomas) Cox. She grew up in her parents' home on what is now the State Park in Burnside. As a senior in high school, she was one of the girls who cut the ribbons with Governor Weatherby to open Lake Cumberland.

Alberta graduated from Miami University in Ohio and received her Masters Degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati. She taught for 30 years in the Sycamore School District in Ohio. She was a great teacher whose concern and compassion went way beyond the classroom. She sponsored a Math Club that involved over 200 middle school kids in afterschool and Saturday activities. She always put the kids up front, taught them to lead all the activities, gave them all the credit for success and quietly stayed in the background beaming with pride, not for her achievement but for the kids' success and growing confidence in themselves.

During her teaching years, she also served teachers, teaching education classes at local colleges and in service activities at Sycamore and across the region. As part of her service to the profession and to children, she was elected to many teacher association boards, including the State Executive Committee of the Ohio Education Association.

Bertie was an encourager everywhere she went. She accepted Christ early in life at Burnside Baptist Church and was a life long advocate for Jesus Christ. She was a member at First Baptist Church of Somerset and Pathfinders Sunday School class. She served faithfully all her life.

Alberta's biggest satisfaction in life came from mentoring and loving her son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She put her heart and soul into teaching them to be caring, competent, and responsible persons. They were and are the joy of her life.

Alberta is survived by her husband, Dave Herron; her sister, Faye Crowe; her son, John Tinsley Carter II & (Gette); her granddaughter, Tinsley Carter & (G.L.) Harbour; grandsons, John Tinsley Carter III & (Erin), and Eric & (Heather) Overly; great-grandchildren, Eden Jewel, Ellison Carter, Elliot Carter, and Christian Overly; step-children, Leslie Nichols, Kathleen Herndon, and Kelly Herron; step-grandchildren, Ashley Herron, Alex Nichols, Carter Rossetter, Julianna Rossetter, and Jessica Carter; and step-great grandchild, Ezra Herron Motolik.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Hazel Cox; her first husband, Roger Carter; and her brother, Robert (Bob Tom) Cox.

A funeral service will be held Friday, September 6th, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Somerset with Bro. David Pendley and Bro. French Harmon officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 PM until time for services at First Baptist Church of Somerset.
