Gardener Decoursey Hieronymus, son of thelate William Shelton and Hazel Johnson Hieronymus, was born in the township of St. Helen's, Lee County, Kentucky on May 11, 1929. He departed this life on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at Hillcrest Manor in Washington Court House, Ohio, having attained the age of 77 years.
G. D. was united in marriage to Rosalie Andersen Hieronymus on October 26, 1957 in Minneapolis, MN. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, G.D. Hieronymus Jr. and his wife Laura (Bertram), and John Hieronymus of Lexington, KY; two daughters, Patty Overing and her husband John of Danville, KY and Mary Hieronymus of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, James and Matthew Overing of Danville, KY
and Kelly and Lindsay Hieronymus of Lexington, KY; one brother, William Shelton Hieronymus, JR and his wife Elza, of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Other surviving relatives includes nieces, nephews and cousins.
Other than his parents, Mr. Hieronymus was preceded in death by: one brother, Thomas Rector Hieronymus; two sisters, Susan H. Seay and Nancy H. Walker.
G. D. graduated from Clark County High School and attended Eastern Kentucky University. He joined the United States Navy in 1950, serving four years on the Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S. Coral Sea. After discharge from the U. S. Navy, he began his employment at East Kentucky Power, retiring as a shift supervisor with thirty-four years of service. G. D. was an avid apiarist (beekeeper) for many years during and after his employment. The honey he gathered and processed from his bees won numerous awards, including several years as "Sweepstakes Winner" at the Kentucky State Fair as well as "Best in Show" awards at the American Beekeeping Federation's (ABF) annual meetings. G. D. served as a board member for the ABF. He gave talks and demonstrations to school groups and others, sharing his interest and knowledge about beekeeping.
Funeral services for Mr. G. D. Hieronymus will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas Wilcoxson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Springs National Cemetery at Nancy, KY.
The family of Mr. G. D. Hieronymus will receive friends at Pulaski Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2006.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Alzhiemers Association or the Hospice Chapter of ones choice.
