Marvin Wolford Marler, age 84, of Somerset, passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010 after a lengthy illness.
He was born in the Quail Community of Rockcastle County, KY on May 9, 1926, son of George W. Marler and Rissie O? Neil Ficklin., and married Frances Alice Sewell on September 29, 1943. Mr. Marler served in World War II in the 1st Horse Calvary during the US occupation of Japan from August 1945 to August 1946. He owned and operated Marler’s Body Shop in Somerset at Crystal Park for over 25 years and was widely known in the auto body business by the name ‘Wiz’. He was also co-owner of Zip-Zip convenient store in Burnside, KY for 5 years and of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his two daughters, Marlene and (Donnie) Ping of Orlando, FL, and Lyndora and (Sam) Phillips of Somerset; two brothers Glen Marler of Durango, CO, and Kenneth Marler of Phoenix, AZ, two sisters Ruth Dunlap of Ogden, UT, and Charlene Richards of Grand Junction, CO, and sister-in-law Mildred Sewell Carter of Somerset; five grandchildren, Allison and (Jimmy) Nash of Orlando, FL, Marvin and (Tracy) Ping of Deltona, FL, Chris and (Leslie) Phillips of Somerset, Christie and (Josh) Seward of Pine Mountain, GA, Mike and (Marsha) Phillips of Science Hill; and eight great-grandchildren, Garrett and Logan Nash, Jared and Kaitlyn Ping, Parker and Jenna Phillips, Belle and Gracie Seward.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Marler; his parents, George Marler and Rissie Ficklin; and two brothers, Earl Ficklin and Harold Marler.
In addition to being a loving husband, daddy, and Pap-Paw, Marvin had many nephews, nieces, and friends that lovingly referred to him as Uncle Marvin, Marv, or Paw. Marvin was widely known for his sense of humor and uncanny wit. Marvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all spending time with his family. He was an avid follower of local youth baseball for many years.
Visitation for Mr. Marler will be on Thursday, December 16 after 5pm at Pulaski Funeral Home in Somerset, KY. Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, December 17 at Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Lonnie Sewell and Chris Phillips officiating.
Burial will be held at Mill Springs National Cemetery with military honors presented by American Legion Post #38 following the funeral services.
The family of Mr. Marler would like to thank Dr. Robert Drake, Comfort Keeper’s, the Veteran’s Administration, and his niece Marla Mobbs for their care and love of Marvin over these many years.
