Bro. Harlos Edmond Vanhook, 90, of Somerset, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Britthaven of Somerset following a lengthy illness. He was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky on October 7, 1920, the son of the late William H. and Ada (Mounce) Vanhook. He was a retired employee of Southern Tire Distributors, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a Baptist minister as long as health allowed. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church No. 1 where he served as pastor for many years. Bro. Vanhook served as pastor of many other local Baptist churches in Pulaski County during his ministry. He devoted his life to his family and the furtherance of God’s kingdom. He enjoyed Bible study, singing, preaching, nature and the UK Wildcats. He is survived by two sons, Gerold Vanhook and Billy (and Donna) Vanhook,both of Somerset; four daughters, Linda (and Winston) Hughes of Goldsboro, NC, Shirley Randall, Marsha (and Billy) Sears and Sylvia Gail Vanhook, all of Somerset; four brothers, Edward, Cortis, Frank and James Vanhook; five sisters, Imogene Hensley, Jane Haynes, Carlene Frye, Sue Estep and Lois Murray; four grandsons, Jonathan Hughes, Steven Hughes, Michael Vanhook and David Sears; two granddaughters, Shellie Jones Spradlin and Keri Hughes Reel; one step-grandson, Tim Pence Jr.; three step-granddaughters, Janice Pence, Tina Parmley and Nikki Burton; eight great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends who will mourn his passing. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Ellen Irene (Mounce) Vanhook, whom he married January 24, 1942 in Pulaski County and who died on June 8, 2000; an infant son, Will; and three brothers, Carl, Arlie and Charles Vanhook. Funeral services will be Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Clay Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 5:00-8:00 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 38. In lieuof flowers, the family requess expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan. Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all arrangements of Bro. Harlos Edmond Vanhook.
