William Cecil Keyes, age 88, died on October 19, 2010 at Britthaven of Somerset. He was born on November 22, 1921 to the late William C. and Fleta Edna Haynes Keyes in the home of his paternal grandparents, the late Luther and Margaret Gill Keyes, on Hwy 39 in Somerset, Kentucky.
Mr. Keyes was known around the area as Uncle Bill or Bill Junior, even though he was not a junior. He played football for Coach William Marshall Clark at Somerset High School and graduated in 1940. He and Katherine Thornton married prior to serving in the military in Africa. Following the war, he worked for his father in oil fields in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming, and then lived in Los Angeles, California before returning to Somerset.
Uncle Bill drove trucks across country for Batesville Casket Company and for the Amstutz Hatchery. He was an avid reader; enjoyed visiting and talking with people; fishing, and hunting were his hobbies.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Keyes sister, Josephine Crawford preceded him in death. Uncle Bill is survived by a half sister, Betty Marie Handl; his daughter, Melinda Hines Brown; a granddaughter, Katie Brown; and great grand twins, Rihan and Brendan.
He is survived by; his niece, Sue Crawford Roth; two great nieces, Kimberly Weddle Shoemaker and her family, and Wetona Renee Wade and her family; and several cousins in Montana.
There will be a graveside service by Reverend Gene Tarter in the Somerset Cemetery on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests contributions take the form of donations to the Cumberland Church Cemetery on Omega Park Road, Somerset, KY. Pallbearers will be Katy Gibson, Kelly Hale, Lauren Hale, Chad Shoemaker, David Wade, Matthew Roth, Michael Noon, and Danny Anderson.
