Dr. William D. "Mac" McAfee

October 18, 1922 — October 14, 2010

William Durham McAfee was born in Greensburg, Kentucky on October 18, 1922, moving to Indianapolis with his family as a young child . “Mac”, as he was known to many, grew up during the Great Depression and worked from the time he was 11 years old. He graduated from Indianapolis public schools, excelling in all his studies. A member of the “Greatest Generation”, he served his country honorably as a medic in WWII in the Pacific arena, winning numerous medals and honors. After the war, he decided to move to Memphis, Tennessee to attend Southern College of Optometry and “to find a Southern belle”. He found that belle, Mary Evelyn Arnold, who remained his devoted wife for 60 years. He practiced Optometry, first in Carlisle, Kentucky for 4 years and then in Somerset, Kentucky for 30 years – as always thorough and conscientious in his duties. He was well respected for his knowledge and devotion to his profession, both by his patients and his colleagues. The main focus of his entire life was his devotion to his God and the Church of Christ. He was baptized into the Church at the age of 12 and remained a faithful, conscientious, and studious Christian until his death. He served the Church in every community in which he lived, quietly helping many in need. He enjoyed and took great pride in his grandchildren and they enjoyed spending time talking with their Papaw about his life and experiences. He was an avid bridge and ten – penny player and was a patient puzzle worker! Having moved with Mary to The Neighborhood of Somerset the year before he died, he had made many friends who loved “Doc” – among them Sharon Reynolds, who patiently and lovingly cared for him until the end. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Mary; two daughters – Lynda Joyce Harris of Richmond, Ky. and Beverly Anne Manley(Nathaniel) of Cookeville, TN, and one son – David Wesley McAfee (Jackie) of Hardinsburg, KY.; six grandchildren – Tanya Stevens, Tiffany Harris, Jonathon Fagan, Joshua Harris, Ryan Fagan, and Andrew Manley. Also surviving are his caring and devoted brother and two sisters – Dr. James R. McAfee (Jean), Charlene Fulkerson, and Ann Tranter (Ed) – all of Lebanon, Indiana; numerous loving nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents – Thurman McAfee and Marguerite Durham McAfee; his sister, Dilma; and an infant son – Larry Wayne McAfee. We mourn his loss and rejoice in his victory! Visitation will be held at the Pulaski Funeral Home in Somerset, Kentucky on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 12:00 with the funeral service to follow at 1:30 pm. At the Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ed Bialon Officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Springs National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post # 38. Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all arrangements for Dr. William Durham “Mac” MaAfee.
