Harold Eugene Tanner, age 87, went to be with our Father in Heaven on Wednesday, September 29, 2010. He was born on June 28, 1923 to the late Parker Reid Tanner and Mamie Childers of Somerset, KY.
At the age of 19, Mr. Tanner joined the Army and served with Company D14th Tank and 634th TD Battalions during World War II. He was wounded twice during his tour of duty that included campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes. He received various medals, including the Purple heart, and was honorably discharged on October 19, 1945.
When he returned to the states he worked miscellaneous jobs, including one with the Palm Beach Company, where he met his wife, Pauline Stogsdill. They were united in marriage on December 20, 1952. Harold continued to work at Palm Beach until 1961. He then worked on various construction projects throughout Kentucky until 1986, when he was injured at a job site in London.
Harold was a member of the AFL-CIO, VFW, and American Legion. He also served with the Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad from 1970 -1984. He was a longtime member of the West Somerset Baptist Church.
Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline, in 2009; two brothers, Ernest and Bill. He is survived by two daughters; Eugenia Tanner of Somerset, and Karen Sue Howard of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, James (and Pauline) Tanner of Loveland, Ohio and Glenn (and Audrey) of mason, Ohio; one sister, Geraldine Rogers of Nancy, Kentucky; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, October 4, 2010 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pulaski Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Butte officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Springs National Cemetery. The American Legion Post # 38 Honor Guard will conduct full military honors for Mr. Tanner.
