Anne Elizabeth Strand, 76, resident of Vero Beach, Florida died peacefully in her sleep September 24, 2010, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky after a brief illness.
She was the cherished wife of the late Karl H. Strand, mother of Karen and Karl Strand (Ellen), and grandmother of Hailey Strand-Meeker, and Karl and Finn Strand. She was born in Lispenhausen, Germany, on June 2, 1934. “Annelisa,” as she was called by her husband, was a loving homemaker who moved to the United States as a newlywed in 1963 (initially East Orange, New Jersey, then Chicago, Illinois, and finally Somerset, Kentucky), from Germany to begin a new life. She and Karl made Somerset their home, and it was there that they raised their family.
Anne was an avid tennis player, a.k.a. “The Human Backboard”, and a superb bowler, who enjoyed playing board- and card-games with her family. She was a “soccer-mom” before the phrase was ever invented. Later in life, she and her husband fell in love with Thoroughbred horseracing, and it was while attending ”The Races” that she most-keenly felt a connection with her husband after his death in 1992.
She was also an active member of the Pulaski County community. In particular, she enjoyed educating others about German culture and food, as well as hosting The Strands’ annual Derby Party, which she did for many years. However, though she considered Kentucky her home, she never lost her delight in telling people where she was from when asked about her German accent, as she frequently was.
Mrs. Strand is survived by many members of an extended family, and a great many friends, both here in the U.S. and in Germany. The family acknowledges with gratitude the care and expertise provided by the Central Baptist Hospital staff during her brief stay.
Funeral will be held at Pulaski Funeral Home, 165 Highway 2227, Somerset, Kentucky. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2010, followed by a short service at 1:00 p.m. A private burial will follow on Monday, October 4, 2010, in the Mill Springs National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, family request that donations be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society.
Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of arrangements for Mrs. Anne Strand.
