Captain John Allen, 88, passed away Tuesday, January 31st, 2017, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. He was born in Cain's Store, Kentucky, May 9th, 1928; son of the late John Edgar Allen and Nona Ethel Wilson Allen. He achieved the rank of sergeant in the United States Army and served during the Korean War. He was employed by the American Steamship Company on the Great Lakes for 43 years. He started as a deckhand and procured the title of captain in 1979. He traveled to France for his training and was well respected by all that worked with him. He was a charter member of the Lake Cumberland Church of the Nazarene in Somerset, Kentucky, where he served on the church board for ten years. He is survived by his wife Phyllis Tucker Allen, son and daughter-in-law David Lawrence Allen and Janice Allen of West Chester, Ohio; one daughter, Jonna Marie Hackathorn of Baldwin City, Kansas; eight grandchildren: Matthew Hackathorn, Nathan Allen, Jonathan Hackathorn, Andrew Allen, Dana Allen, Stephanie Hackathorn, Madeline Hackathorn, and Wyatt Hackathorn; one great-granddaughter Ava Hackathorn. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and two brothers. The visitation will be on Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pulaski Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Pulaski Funeral Home. The burial will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all arrangements for Captain John Allen.
