Clarence Meeks, 85, of Somerset, Kentucky, was called to everlasting rest on Tuesday, October 18, 2016. He was born on January 17, 1931 in Evergreen, Alabama to the late Mrs. Jessie Lynch. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lewis Meeks, and his two children, Michaela (Reginald) Herndon of Virginia and Phillip (Donna) Meeks of Jeffersonville, Indiana. After growing up in Evergreen, Alabama, Clarence lived in Jeffersonville, Indiana for many years. He enlisted in the Army where he traveled throughout the United States and overseas. As a Korean War veteran, SSG Meeks, served in many professional capacities including light truck driver, heavy truck driver, and wheeled vehicle mechanic. He received many awards and decorations during his 20 years of honorable service. Upon his retirement in 1968, he was recognized with the Army Commendation Medal, as well as special recognition for hundreds of miles of safe driving and a citation indicating that SSG Meeks helped to maintain the security of the country during a most critical period in the nation’s history, he did so with such devotion to duty and a spirit of sacrifice that exemplified the proud traditions of military service! After his military retirement, Clarence returned to Jeffersonville, Indiana where his military skills and professionalism landed him a job as a truck driver for General Mills Pillsbury, where he also retired after 20 years. In addition to his passion for driving, Clarence was a self-taught horticulturalist. He loved to work in his yard where he created and maintained beautiful flower gardens. He understood the science of plants so much that he successfully cultivated beautiful shrubs and trees that had failed to grow in other places. A devout Christian, and true man of God, Clarence accepted Christ at an early age and attended chapel service throughout his military career. He later attended the Gilt Edge Missionary Baptist Church in Jeffersonville, Indiana. After relocating to Somerset, Kentucky, whenever his health permitted, he attended Mt Olive Baptist Church. He enjoyed travelling with his wife, Phyllis. They toured places that allowed them to share different cultural experiences. The rest of his time was spent adoring his beautiful wife, whom he loved dearly. Other survivors are seven grandchildren and an array of great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Clarence loved Phyllis' family who were like mother, father, brother and sisters to him. Preceded in death from this family were William Howard and Russie Lewis, mother and father-in-laws, William Ray Lewis, brother-in-law and Patricia Lewis Horton, sister-in-law. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Sheila Lewis, who was a dear friend. He is also survived by his good friend, Arthur J. Perry and a host of relatives and friends. He was loved, and known for his good nature and generous heart. His home going is a celebration of his reunion with God and a reminder that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. Friends and family may visit at Pulaski Funeral Home, 165 Hwy 2227, Somerset, KY 42503 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 27, 2016. The funeral will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, October 28, 2016 at Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Siebert Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the Mill Springs National Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 of Somerset, Kentucky. Pulaski Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Mr. Clarence Meeks.
