Mrs. “Winnie” Hager Ikerd passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on the morning of Friday, April 8, 2016. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Somerset.
Born to Sally Belle Moose and Andrew D. Hager in Lincoln County, NC on October 6, 1928, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Earl Hager and Ray Alexander Hager, two sisters, Grace Frances Hager Brotherton and Avis Hager Jones Upchurch, and her husband of 65 years, Frank H. Ikerd, Jr.
She was adored by sons Frank (Charlotte) Ikerd III and Rick (Melissa) Ikerd of Somerset, daughter Jasie (Louis) Mulloy, of Lexington, grandchildren Leslie, Emily, Frank IV, Sarah, Lindsey, Sydney and Mackenzie, great-grandchildren Ashton, Coulter, Ellie, Chas, Robey, Emery Kate and Noah, a beloved companion and friend, Laura Wilson, her long-time golfing companion, Annie Watkins and other dear friends, Virginia Hawkins and Carolyn Burton, as well as many more friends and relatives.
“Ms. Winnie,” as she was affectionately known, kept books for the family coal mining business in its early years and was a supportive and loving mother and wife. She took up the game of golf in her 40’s, and quickly became a formidable opponent and champion of the game. She loved competing and was a memorable icon on the course, always dressed impeccably in sporty golfing attire. A room in Winnie’s home is literally filled with plaques, trophies, medals and awards she earned in countless tournaments and league play.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ikerd will be held at noon on Wednesday, April 13 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Robert F. Browning officiating. Visitation will be before the service from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. Entombment at Lakeside Memorial Gardens will follow the service. The family invites all friends and relatives to a fellowship dinner at First United Methodist Church, starting around 2 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Winnie Ikerd Golf Scholarship Fund, c/o Evans, Harville, Atwell & Company, CPAs 116 Trade Park Dr, Somerset, KY 42501. The scholarship will be used to encourage young women to participate in the game of golf and will provide funds to local high-school golf teams and players.
