Mr. Lloyd Preston Johnson, Sr., age 80 of Somerset, KY (formerly of Berea), passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital under the loving and compassionate care of Lake Cumberland Hospice. He retired from S&T Hardware, and was the former owner of J & M Office Supply Company. Lloyd was born on February 21st, 1929 in Berea, Kentucky, the son of the late Stanley and Jessie Gladys Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Bishop Johnson, and three brothers; Clyde Burt Johnson, John William “Bobby” Johnson, and his twin brother Parrice Eugene Johnson. Lloyd served in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company E., 19th regiment, 24th Infantry Division where he served for four and one-half years, attaining the rank of Master Sargent. He was awarded the following military honors: Combat Infantry Badge, 2 Purple Heart, 5 Bronze Stars, Occupational Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Medal, and the U.N. Service Medal.
He is survived by children, Elizabeth Ann Klein (al) of Greenville, IN; Lloyd Preston Johnson, Jr. (Vickie) of Somerset; one brother Fred L. Johnson of Lexington, and grandchildren Preston Lee Johnson (Kristi); Adam Lloyd Johnson (Jessica), and a great grand daughter Alyson Michelle Johnson all of Somerset.
Lloyd was a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church. After retirement, Lloyd devoted his time as a volunteer for the Somerset Little League Football Program (25 years) and the Burnside Little League and Senior League Baseball Programs (11 years). Lloyd was the President and principal fundraiser for expenditures required to improve the Burnside Little League programs. Lloyd was also President and oversaw construction at the time land was acquired in Somerset to build a Senior League ball field later named in his honor behind the Somerset Mall. Lloyd was a member of the Somerset VFW, the Somerset Moose Lodge, the Somerset Outdoorsman Club, and the Somerset Boat Dock Club. Lloyd received many other high honors from the City of Burnside, Pulaski County Government, and the Kentucky Colonels for his work and Dedication with the youth of this community.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Katterheinrich officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Springs National Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post # 38.
The family of Mr. Lloyd Preston Johnson, Sr. will receive friends after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home and after 8:00 a.m. Thursday until after services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
