Thomas Hope “Tom” Moody of Tateville passed away Tuesday, February 2nd at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital following a short illness. He was born May 12, 1922 in Burnside, Kentucky to the late Spencer and Edna G. Moody. Tom, a well-known resident of the southern part of the county, was one of the few remaining natives of the original town.
He attended Burnside Elementary, then moved to Lexington and attended Morton Junior High and graduated in 1939 from the now closed University High. On returning to Burnside, he met Mildred “Midge” Bryant, whom he married on December 14, 1940. She preceded him in death. He enlisted in the Army and served as company clerk for a Military Police unit at Camp Shelby, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. After discharge from service, the family lived briefly in Illinois, Indiana, and Texas before returning to Tateville.
Tom and his younger brother Ben trucked together for a time before Tom took a job driving for the J. Heber Lewis Oil Company. As Lake Cumberland was being developed, he took a job with Massman Construction, pouring the piers for the new highway bridge. In 1950 he went to work for family friends, O.L. and Carrie Lee Dyer at the Rexall Drug store. He remained there with the new owner, Don Hamlin, until the store closed in 2000, all the while enjoying meeting and helping everyone he could.
He was a 70 year member of the Burnside Masonic Lodge, where he served as secretary and later as Master. Although not a member, he was a faithful attendee at Tateville Baptist Church as long as his health allowed.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Moody and Eva (Foster) Massey and three brothers, Amos (Susie) Moody, Wallace (Frances) Moody and Ben Moody, whose wife, Lucille survives.
He is survived by two children, Ann Hope (Roger) Hollars of Somerset and Glenn Moody of Tateville, two grandchildren, Sam Hollars of Lexington and Amanda Hope (Robbie) Tindall of Louisville, and great grandchildren, Jack, Owen Thomas, and Luke Tindall, and their new brother, expected in June. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews who he enjoyed watching grow up.
The family of Mr. Moody would like to give thanks to his special caregivers, especially Kathy Loveless!
Visitation will be on Saturday, February 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pulaski Funeral Home. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Moody family plot at Elk Springs Cemetery in Monticello. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Burnside Cemetery Fund, the Tateville Baptist Church Children’s Sunday School or the Somerset Community College Foundation.
