Gloria Amelia (Glass) Stanton of Cumberland Heights, Burnside, Kentucky, passed away April 15th, 2015 from complications of a rare form of cancer, signet cell carcinoma.
Gloria Amelia (Glass) Stanton was born on April 18, 1940 in Duluth, Minnesota, to the late Evan and Ida Glass. She grew up on Park Point with sisters Gail and Marianne and brother Evan, and was always happy to refer to herself as a Park Pointer. Her book, Growing Up on Park Point in the 1940’s and 1950’s, explains a lot about her childhood and the wonderful adventures she was able to have there. She grew up attending St. Andrew’s by-the-lake Episcopal Church on Park Point, she graduated from Central High School in 1958, and she graduated in 1962 from the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
She fell in love with Oris Stanton, and they married in 1963. Shortly afterwards they moved to Mississippi, and then to Rochester, New York, where she raised her two children, Murray and Sherrill. She was a fun young mother, who always kept busy with things like leading Girl Scouts, JOY Club, teaching Sunday School and being the church pianist at Rochester Baptist Church and North Greece Baptist Church, and helping in church and school activities wherever she could.
In 1991 Gloria and Oris moved to Somerset, KY. She continued with many of her interests. She taught the Ruth Open Door Sunday School and sang in the choir at Beacon Hill Baptist Church for 18 years. Gloria was a member of First Baptist Church of Somerset, KY. She enjoyed the local homemaker’s group, and led and attended several Bible studies. She was a member of the Burnside Ethics Committee, and was Historian for Book-Link, Inc. She taught ESL through continuing education at Somerset Community and Technical College, and later continued teaching ESL through the church. She was active in several social groups including Silver Sneakers, Senior Friends, Women on Mission, the Watershed Arts Alliance, Lake Cumberland Loons, and TOPS. She was proud of her children and grandchildren, and loved spending time with them. She loved her Scandinavian and English roots and enjoyed hosting high teas, and she loved her dog, Pearl.
Gloria was a prolific free-lance writer, with hundreds of poems, articles and stories written in various magazines and anthologies. She edited several books including Sailing East and West, Out of the Fog, When You Seek Me, Bobbie’s Joke Book, and Crisis in Green Valley. Gloria is survived by her husband, Oris L. Stanton; her son, Murray O. (Sarah) Stanton of Deary, Idaho; her daughter, Sherrill L. (Skip) Howe of Kingsville, Maryland; and six grandsons: Christopher , Nathan, and Conner Howe; Gray, Olav, and Carl Stanton. She was predeceased by her sisters Gail Johnson and Marianne Olson, and is survived by her brother Evan B. Glass of Babbitt, Minnesota. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.
The funeral service was held at 1:00 p.m. April 24, 2015 at Pulaski Funeral Home. Interment followed at the Lakeside Memorial Gardens, directly following the service.
