Rose Ella (Russell) Denney

October 30, 1929 — December 6, 2008

Rose Ella (Russell) Denney was born in Bald Rock, Kentucky to Bertha Cadell and Delbert Russell on the day the stock market crashed in 1929 and she left this world on Pearl Harbor Day, 2008. As our nation was on the brink of a national financial disaster nearly as grim as had marked her early years, she was grateful to have lived long enough to see Barack Obama elected president of the United States of America-a land that she loved. She was frugal, thrifty and fiscally conservative-but exceptionally generous. She was an accomplished quilter & gardener and a homemaker who could make beautiful, serviceable things out of cast-offs. She could wave her hands over a green Fire King bowl and make biscuits appear. She believed that” The best fun is work” and was only dis-satisfied when she felt (rarely) that she “Didn’t have anything to show for the day.” She had a fire-y temper and could be maddeningly stubborn- but also compassionate and tolerant. She was not “set in her ways” and was open to new opportunities and experiences. In recent years, she enjoyed fitness classes with the Silver Sneakers group at the YMCA and the OSHER life-long learning experiences through the University of Kentucky. She was an enthusiastic reader and a sharp thinker who completed her GED and a 2 year college degree when she was in her 50’s. She is survived by two sons-Wayne Brock of Knoxville, Tennessee; Troy Brock of Cincinnati, Ohio, and two daughters-Deborah Phillips of Sun City West, Arizona; Ingrid Denney of Somerset, Kentucky-as well as five grandchildren and four greats. Her mama, daddy, two baby sisters and one young brother have all gone before. Rose Denney was buried at Mill Springs National Cemetery with the love of her life and husband of 50 years, Wallace Denney, who passed away just this past spring. In accordance with her beliefs, wishes, and prior plans, there was a brief, simple, intimate memorial service with old hymns and soft words yesterday morning, December 9th. Her casket was decorated with a flower garden quilt she made and her grave adorned with a basket full of ever-green boughs cut from trees she and her husband planted years ago. She wrote her own epitaph: TO BE CONTINUED She requested that expressions of sympathy be in the form of donations to Hospice of Lake Cumberland. Pulaski Funeral Home was-and honored to be in charge of arrangements.
