Mr. William Walter Colyer, age 90, of Somerset passed away Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Cumberland Nursing and Rehab.
He was born in the Alcalde community on July 16, 1924 to the late Neal and Rosie Mounce Colyer.
He married Thelma Bradley Colyer on January 31, 1953, she survives.
He enlisted with the Army on May 21, 1943 and served until he was discharged on December 18, 1945 after being wounded on January 23, 1945 in Germany, for which he was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was a member of the Buck Creek Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and as a Sunday School teacher. He loved the Lord, his church, and he enjoyed gospel singing.
He worked for N.C.R. Company in Dayton, Ohio for 9 years before moving back to Kentucky in 1962. He also worked at Cumberland Wood and Chair for 19 years until his retirement. After retiring, he spent his later years farming.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Thelma Bradley Colyer, their two children, Roger (and Cindy) Colyer and Rhonda Jill (and Jimmy) Phelps both of Somerset; six grandchildren, Teya (and Greg) Dungan, Kelli (and Chris) Fain, Jon (and Amber Whitis) McKinney, Beth Phelps, Allison Willet and Natasha Willet; four great grandchildren, Daylan and Gabriel Dungan, Caiden and Conner Fain, Austin McKinney and Landon Mobley. He is also survived by one sister, Lois Erisman; and four brothers, Richard, Harold, Eugene, and Lyman Colyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Clyde Colyer and five sisters, Nora Ping, Zada Colyer, Hazel McCreary, Roberta Waddle, and Imogene Denniston and a daughter-in-law, Ruth (Haynes) Colyer.
The family of Mr. Colyer would like to acknowledge the wonderful compassionate care given to him during his stay at Cumberland Nursing and Rehab.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 7, 2014 at the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Bullock and Rev. Jamie Epperson officiating. Burial will follow in the Clay Hill Cemetery.
The family of Mr. William Walter Colyer will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 11:30 a.m. Sunday until time for services.
In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Gideon Memorial Bible Plan or the Buck Creek Baptist Church.
