Lawrence H. Whitis, age 90 of Somerset, went to his Heavenly Home on Wednesday, April 16, 2013. Lawrence was born in Pulaski County, KY, the son of the late Elmer and Balzora Whitis.
Lawrence served in WWII in the Navy Branch as a Seabee. Lawrence was former owner and operator of Whitis Market and was a retired Farmer. He was a member of Nelson Valley Baptist Church where he served as Trustee. He wed his first wife, the late Retha Ping Whitis, in 1945. To this union, two daughters were born, Marcella Massey Litton and Marella Stevens. Lawrence later wed Alma Petrey Whitis in 1970, she survives.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, and the following siblings, Oather Whitis, Robert Whitis, Gertrude Whitis Estep, Melvin Whitis, Clarence Whitis, Ola Whitis Wells, Edna Whitis Stringer, Earl Whitis, Verel Whitis and Beaulah Whitis. He is survived by the following siblings, Anna Whitis Messenger and Mattie Whitis Powell.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Petrey Whitis, daughters Marcella Massey Litton and Marella Stevens (Don). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Meshelle Massey, Bryan Massey (Kristie), J.R. Stevens (Kim), Rodney Stevens (Jennifer). He is also survived by the following great grandchildren, David Lee Foster, Johnny J.M. Rhodus, Tyler Rhodus, Brittany Massey, Emily Massey, Lynsey Stevens, Abby Stevens, Tristan Purcell, Gavin Stevens, Isabella Stevens and Benito Zaragoza. He is survived by one great-great granddaughter, Astella Kaye Foster.
Lawrence will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive visitors for Mr. Lawrence H. Whitis on Saturday, April 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home. The funeral will immediately follow the visitation at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held in Eden cemetery.
Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #38 honor guard.
