Irene Davidson Taylor, age 96, of Somerset, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Irene was born on November 23, 1917 in Somerset to the late Joseph W. and Margaret Anne Davidson. She was married to Valando B. Taylor, who died in 2003 after an extended illness. Irene graduated from Somerset High School and Sue Bennett College in London. She went on to teach in a one room schoolhouse and eventually worked for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service for thirty years.
Irene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Somerset, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She served as President of the United Methodist Women’s Society for two years.
Irene and Valando traveled frequently, often with their grandson John. They visited the Canary Islands, Hawaii, Mexico, and New York City among other places. Irene’s greatest joy was being a seamstress. She started sewing her own doll clothes and ended up sewing most of her wardrobe as well as her daughter’s. She also enjoyed working in her flower garden. She had many friends who enriched her life.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister, Elsie Davidson. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Hamilton; her daughter, Jo Anne Taylor; and her only grandson, John W. Fitzwater Jr., all of Somerset. The family is grateful for the care provided to Irene by the Neighborhood during her last years and Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in her last days.
