Mrs. Myron “Mickey” Malcolm, age 86, of Somerset, KY, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 at Somerset Nursing & Rehabilitation.
Mickey was born in Detroit, MI, to the late Jesse and Mable (Graham) Wilson on July 5, 1927. Growing up in Detroit, Mickey sang in the choir and was active in the youth group at Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church.
It was at a church function where she met Allen Edward “Ed” Malcolm, whom she married on November 2, 1945. After 48 wonderful years together, Ed preceded her in death on July 20, 1994.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Edsel Wilson.
She is survived by one son, Steve Malcolm (Lisa) of Alpine, Arizona; three daughters: Karen Hatala (Howard) of Maryville, TN, Kathy Hall (Ramsay) of Atlanta, GA, and Kime Harris (Jeff) of Somerset; one granddaughter: Jillian Hall of Atlanta; six grandsons: Greg Malcolm of Louisville, KY, Rob Hatala (Debbie) of Dayton, OH, Chad Hatala and Abigail Buczynski of Knoxville, TN, Tanner Harris of Somerset, Keegan Harris of Somerset, and Camden Harris of Somerset; and two great grandchildren.
She is also survived by Dinah Dick, who as Mickey’s caregiver for several years became a part of the family.
Mickey became a Christian at a young age and lived her entire life in service to God. After she and Ed moved to Somerset in 1975, she became a devoted member of Beacon Hill Baptist Church, where for more than 30 years she taught Sunday School for a group of special ladies she called her “angels.”
More than anything, Mickey enjoyed spending time with her “grandbabies.” She also loved traveling, reading, doing crossword puzzles, and the color peach. She had an easy laugh, enjoyed lots of pepper on her cole slaw, and had the special talent of being able to reduce even the most complex situation into a simple adage or cliché. Of death, she might say, “We’ve all gotta go sometime.”
Mickey was a generous and caring wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and friend, and she will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
Visitation for Mickey Malcolm will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014 at Beacon Hill Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow with Rev. Marvin Reynolds officiating.
Interment will take place at Lakeside Memorial Garden immediately after the services.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Beacon Hill Baptist Church’s Student Center.
The family would also like to take this opportunity to express their heartfelt thanks for the compassionate care she received in the last months of her life, first at home from Mrs. Dick and Karen Lamb, and later from the excellent staffs of both Somerset Nursing and Rehabilitation and Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
Pulaski Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of all arrangements for Mrs. Mickey Malcolm.
