John Robert Neikirk, "Bob", son of the late G.P. and Lula Pearl Neikirk, was born August 30, 1933, and died May 27, 2013. After a brief illness with loved ones near, Bob departed this life Sunday evening from his home on North Main Street in Somerset. He was born in the Possum Trot area of Pulaski County. Raised on a family farm just off Clifty Road, Bob attended The Cundiff School, continuing his education through the Somerset school system and graduated in 1952. He graduated from Georgetown College, in 1956 with a BA in Business. He was married to the late Ann Holtzclaw Neikirk. They are survived by four children, Joseph Richard (Melissa) Neikirk, Judy Nell (Michael) Kluempke, Laura Ann (Harold) Megargel and John Russell Neikirk and one sister, Lena Pearl Neikirk. Bob is also survived by seven grandchildren, Joy, Sarah, Joseph, Jacob, Andy, C.J., Tyler and four great grandchildren Samuel, Wesley, Alden, and Parker.
He was preceded in death by parents Lula Pearl Fisher Neikirk and Grover Postal Neikirk and 7 siblings, Russell, Homer, Lucille, Ray, Roy and Glenn.
Bob was a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg, NC and returned after service to the insurance business with Sams Insurance. He established his own agency, Neikirk Insurance, in 1977.
Bob was active in many civic activities and was a lifelong Republican. He was very active in the community as a Jaycee and coached Little League football and baseball. He also served two terms as a member of the Somerset School Board. Most recently he was recognized for his forty years of service as Deacon at First Baptist Church. He loved to hunt, fish and play golf. His many friends and family cherished Bob and he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be at Pulaski Funeral Home Thursday, May 30, from 6-9pm. Funeral Services will be at 1pm, Friday, May 31 at Pulaski Funeral Home with Reverend John Wilson officiating. Interment will be at the Bishop Cemetery.
