Velma Merrick Yanders departed this life on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in Somerset, Kentucky having attained the age of 84 years. She was born in the Naomi Community of Pulaski County, Kentucky on May 11, 1928 to the late Claude and Cardova Wood Merrick.
She was united in marriage to her beloved husband, Mr. Robert Baker Yanders on October 31, 1947 in Jamestown, Kentucky. They had been married for 48 years when he departed this life on April 6, 1996. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her only sister, Elsie Trimble of Dayton, Ohio who passed away on January 10, 1997.
Survivors include; one son, Danny C. (and his wife Shirlene) Yanders of Nancy, Kentucky; one daughter, Dianna L. (and her husband James L.) Rice, Jr. of Somerset, Kentucky where she made her home for 15 years and who was her caregiver and best friend. Two grandchildren, Robert James (and his wife Melanie) Rice of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Sherri Lynn (and her husband Chris) Fox of Newport, Tennessee. She had two great granddaughters, Hannah Elizabeth and Emma Katherine Rice of Bowling Green, Kentucky. She leaves behind a host of nieces, and nephews who will mourn her passing. She loved being with her family and wants them to join her in her heavenly home where there will be no sickness, no sadness, and no sorrows. What a great reunion day that will be.
Velma was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Church, Nancy, Kentucky. She loved singing gospel music and she loved the Lord with all her heart. She was involved in church and helped with the MYF Youth Group until she was no longer able to attend. She loved watching WLJC every night and other Christian stations. She was a loving and kind person who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Friday, February 15, 2013 at the Chapel of the Pulaski Funeral Home with Dr. Ted Beam officiating. Burial will follow in the Mill Springs National Cemetery, Nancy, Kentucky.
The family of Mrs. Velma Merrick Yanders will receive friends at the Pulaski Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. Friday morning until time for services. In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Gideon memorial Bible Plan.
