Lois I. (Nee) Richardson Smith

d. January 12, 2013

Lois I. (nee) Richardson Smith, age 94, formerly of (Woodson Bend) Bronston, and Somerset, KY. Beloved wife of the late John R. Smith and devoted mother of Karen (Smith) Cavell, peacefully passed away (under Hospice care) on January 12, 2013, at the home, of her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and John Cavell, in Whitmore Lake, Michigan. Lois is survived by her daughter and son-in-law as well as her brother, Clifford Richardson, of Centerville, Ohio and many nieces and nephews. Family preceding Lois in death are: Her parents, Eugene and Florence Richardson of Covington, KY and her sisters and brother: Hazel Richardson, William Richardson, Ethel Martin, Hester Elmore, Alma Schomaker, Eugenia Biddle, Irene Sleete, Mary Richardson and Wilma Meloy. During her years of employment, Lois evolved from a young dental assistant in Cincinnati to a highly regarded dental office manager in Detroit, who was friends with individuals ranging from janitors to one of the presidents and CEO of General Motors. After relocating to Ohio, her employment background included being a women's retail clothing sales person, an apartment rental agent and one of the first lady auto/truck sales persons in the Dayton area. Surprisingly, her favorite vehicle to demonstrate was the Doge Ram Dually! After Lois and her husband retired and moved to Woodson Bend in Bronston, they became members of First Baptist Church in Somerset. Lois was a choir member and had many friends in the congregation. As a widow, Lois moved into Somerset where she continued to work on and enjoy the monthly Somerset Area Christian Women's Club luncheons and fashion shows. She looked forward to visiting with numerous Somerset business women each month while she delivered the free tickets for distribution. Lois had great fun donning beautiful outfits along with many other ladies who modeled during those luncheons. Her last job was at Lovemore Jewelry Store, where she both worked and enjoyed the friendship of co-workers and customers for several years. In October of 2000, Lois moved to Michigan with her only child, Karen and her husband. Lois and Karen were a twosome during the day, showing up at quilting groups, art classes, shopping and visiting with old friends and family. You should have seen her climbing in and "sitting shotgun" in Karen's black GMC Sierra truck and heading off for the day's activities. Without our knowing it, Lewy Body Dementia was creeping up on her then and we were lucky to have her active and with all her abilities in tact for just about two years. Burial and a memorial service, to celebrate Lois' life, will take place at Lakeside Memorial Gardens Chapel in Somerset, KY on a yet to be determined date in the spring of 2013. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Alzheimer's Assn., www.alz.org or the Hospice of Lake Cumberland, 100 Parkway Dr., Somerset, KY, 679-4389.
