James M. “Jim” (Grasshopper) Childers, age 77 of Somerset, passed away on October 20, 2012 at his residence. He was born June 22, 1935 in Winfield, Tennessee, the 8th of 9 children born to the late Millard and Martha (West) Childers. He followed his three older brothers to Somerset in 1953 and worked for Southern Bell Dairy. He served for many years as a Fieldman and became good friends with many producers and their families. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by brothers: Harrison and Bill Childers and a sister: Mattie Burress.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years: Anna Kaye Lewis Childers. Also surviving are his son: James (and Cherri) Childers and his daughter: Carolyn Sue Epperson, two grandsons: Christopher Alan Epperson and Joseph Robert “Joe-Joe” (and Jacki) Epperson and three grandchildren; Bailey Nicole Epperson, Raydon Joseph Epperson and Chole Rain Epperson. Jim is also survived by 3 sisters: Hattie Morris, of Nashville, Tennessee, June Butler of Gadsden, Alabama and Betty Rose King of Oneida, Tennessee, two brothers: George Childers of Somerset, Kentucky and Louie (and Barbara) Childers of Harrogate, Tennessee, one sister-in-law: Lela Childers of Somerset, Kentucky, one brother-in-law: Ira Burress Winfield. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends who all mourn his passing.
In his earlier years Jim could be found on the lake, riding horses or bowling on the men’s league at Briar Bowl Lanes. As long as his health permitted he anxiously awaited his trips to “The Cabin” on the old home place.
Visitation for Mr. James “Jim” Childers will be Tuesday, October 23, 2012 after 5:00 p.m. at the Pulaski Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Ryan officiating. Entombment will follow in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers family request expressions of sympathy be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
