Ira Jackson “Red” Cornett, 95, of Somerset, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 in Somerset, Kentucky
Ira was born on September 12, 1916 in Laurel County, Kentucky to the late Stella Alice Peters and George Blevins Cornett. He married Mary Elizabeth Yaden, daughter of the late Callie Morgan Burns and L.H. Yaden, on April 10, 1941.
Ira established Cornett Machine Shop in Somerset, Kentucky in 1948. He was an avid outdoorsman, a member of the Masonic Lodge #111 and the Oleika Shrine Temple, and was the recipient of the 2006 Kentucky Outstanding Older Worker of the Year award. Ira was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Somerset and was a Kentucky Colonel.
Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers: Estill Cornett, Orville Cornett, Orie Cornett, and Clyde Cornett; and a sister: Dorothy Cornett Wittenback.
Ira is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth; two brothers: George Cornett of Louisville, Kentucky, and Ralph (and Izzie) Cornett of London, Kentucky; four children: Mary Ann (and Don) Bingham of Birmingham, Alabama, Arlene Cornett Warner, David Lee (and Karen) Cornett, and Jack Wayne (and Dee) Cornett all of Somerset, Kentucky; eleven grandchildren: Lisa (and Steve) Weldon of Birmingham, Alabama, Donna Bingham, Jennifer (and Bob) Burgess, Laura (and Tim) Hamilton, Chris (and Brandy) Cornett, Brett Cornett, Lauren Cornett, Isaiah Cornett, and Joshua Cornett, all of Somerset, Kentucky, Lindsey (and Aaron) Bivens of Lexington, Kentucky, and Rick Warner of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Katie, Casey, and Riley Weldon; Morgan, Kendall, Grace, and Jackson Burgess; Braeden and Camryn Loveless; Will and Caroline Bivens; Renner Cornett; and Bryn Cornett.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Somerset First Baptist Church with Dr. French Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens.
The family of Mr. Ira Jackson “Red” Cornett will receive friends on Thursday, July 12, 2012 after 5:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers the family request expressions of sympathy be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1900 Richmond Road. Lexington, Kentucky 40502. Envelopes will be available at the Church.
