Sophia Burkett Flynn, 83, departed this life on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She was born in the Naomi Community of Pulaski County July 2, 1928, daughter of the late Wiley and Evay Scrimager Burkett.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was a life long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served on many committees and boards.
She taught a women’s Sunday school for many years. She worked at Palm Beach, was co-owner of Sophia’s Hallmark Gallery and worked at Carolyn’s Furniture. She enjoyed flower arranging, decorating wedding cakes, sewing and directing weddings for family and friends.
Sophia was married to Dewell Orville Flynn in 1947 and had two sons, Weyneth and Stephen Flynn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwell, her parents, Wiley and Evay Burkett, and step-mother, Ophie McFall Burkett; four brothers, Amos, Dean, Dewey, and Leonard Burkett.
She is survived by two sons, Weyneth Flynn and his wife, Susan and Stephen Flynn and his wife, Brenda all of Nancy KY; two brothers, Charles Burkett and his wife, Linda of Hiltons, VA and Garvis Burkett and his wife, Myrtle of Somerset, KY; sisters-in-law Dorothy Muse and Alene Burkett; special niece, Janice Burkett Palmer; a step-sister; Delores Spruill and her husband Dick, of Jacksonville, Florida; five grandchildren, Anthony Flynn, Brandon Flynn, Sabrina Schoolcraft, Jeremy Flynn and Jamie Woodall ; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Bro. Larry Harris and Bro Lester Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery , Nancy, KY.
Visitation will be observed, Tuesday, April 3 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at the Pulaski Funeral Home, and from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2012 until time for services at the church.
