John William (Bill) Edwards, husband of Margie Farmer Edwards for 59 years, died Friday, June 29, 2007. He was born July 8, 1926 to the late John Breckenridge Edwards and Maggie Catherine Waddle Edwards of Pulaski County, KY. Bill was the third child and firstborn son of his parents: a brilliant, gifted , and handsome son At age fourteen he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior, and was baptized at the Clay Hill Baptist Church at Ruth, KY. and he later became a member of the White Lily Baptist Church.
As a U.S. Army soldier and member of the Occupation Force in Japan at the end of WWII, he was an effective leader. He was in charge a of group of U. S. soldiers and Japanese men who restored communication and electrical systems in the country of Japan.
Following his discharge from military service he married his sweetheart, and soon became a long-distance truck driver traveling more than a million miles across the country. He held this position rarely missing a day's work until he was seventy years old.
In addition to his wife, family members who survive Mr. Edwards include a daughter, Cheryl Jean Edwards Burnett (Gary) of Lexington, KY; a son John William Edwards, Jr. (Linda) of Somerset; and two grandchildren: Gary Michael Burnett and Amy Elizabeth Edwards Burnett of Lexington. He is also survived by five sisters: Kathleen Edwards Rogers of Florence, KY; Margaret Edwards Atkinson (J.C.) of Elyria,OH; Doris Herald (Ned); Lona Marie Beattie (Milton); and Sue Tarter (Garnett) of Pulaski County,KY, and four brothers: James E.(Jim) Edwards (Kathleen); Robert L.(Bob) Edwards (Frances); Maurice (Bud) Edwards (Donna); and Kenneth D. (Kenny) Edwards (Karen); his step-mother, Hazel Hines Edwards, as well as a number of devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins. An older sister, Elizabeth Edwards Finks of Madison, VA preceded him in death in December, l993.
Nephews and close friends will serve as pall bearers.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday evening beginning at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 01, 2006 at the Pulaski Funeral Chapel and from 8:00 a.m. Monday, July 02, 2007 until time for services at the funeral home. Funeral Services for Mr. Edwards will be held for immediate and extended family members on Monday, July 2 at 11:00 o'clock A.M. with burial following at the Poplarville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to The American Lung Association.
