Katherine “Kay” Warren Hukill Burton, 100 Neighborly Way, Somerset, KY, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2011, at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in the presence of her daughters having attained the age of 89. Katherine was born in Lexington, KY, on March 24, 1922, to the late Frank Young Hukill and Dollie Cravens Hukill.
She was united in marriage for 62 years to the late, Bernard A. Burton, on April 21, 1949, at the First Baptist Church of Lexington, KY. He preceded her in death on June 11, 2011. To this union were born two daughters: Mary Jane Brown (husband John) and Linda Jasper (husband Bruce) both of Somerset. She has two grandchildren John Brown II (wife Inace) and Mary Katherine “Katie” Jasper Smith (husband Dylan) also of Somerset. One great grandchild is expected in September to John and Inace Brown.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her sister Dorothy (late John “Jay”) Tackett of Lexington, KY. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Jewell (late Gene) Bramel of Erlanger, KY, Montie (late Rev. Leon) Wesley of Louisville, KY, Lillian (Tom) Morrow of Fairfax, VA, Christine (Ben) Shadoan of Greenville, SC, brother-in law, Arlen V. Burton of Louisa, KY, and special friend and loving caregiver to Katherine and the family, Beverly Stewart also of Somerset.
Her siblings and their spouses that preceded her in death are: T.D. (Martha) Hukill, Frank Young Hukill, Jr., and Mary Willis (Willard) Hopper.
Katherine was of the Baptist faith attending First Baptist Church, Lexington, KY as a child and was a member of First Baptist Church of Somerset, KY. She was an accomplished seamstress, creating entire wedding ensembles in Lexington, KY prior to her marriage. She also displayed her creative abilities through flower arranging, serving on the flower committee at First Baptist Church, and opening Olde Towne Florist. Katherine was an active member of the Somerset Woman’s Club for many years having served in many capacities including club president. Her greatest joy was her family, especially spoiling her grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral services for Katherine Burton will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 at Pulaski Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with funeral services to follow in the chapel at 1:00 pm with William Adcock officiating. Katherine will be laid to rest in the Mill Springs National Cemetery, Nancy, KY. In lieu of flowers the family requests that expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland or the charity of their choice.
